Provincial Secretary Agriculture Nazar Hessian Maher on Wednesday announced the constitution of 13-member sugarcane cess regional committee under Sugarcane Cess Rules 1964.

He said Sindh Government through a notification had notified the names of 13 members of provincial Assembly including two lady members - Rani Ambreen from Nawabshah district and Mrs Gulzar Unnar from Khairpur district.

Agriculture Secretary while emphasising need for development of public - private partnership in seed sector with a view to improve the availability of quality seeds to growers, said that Private Seed Companies and growers' Associations should also explore the possibilities of importing quality hybrid seed of Sunflower and other cash crops. That would help the farming community to improve their per acre yield and make their produce cost effective.

Referring to marketing of poor quality of wheat seed he said a number of check posts might be set up at Sindh-Punjab borders to restrict the entry of unapproved variety of seeds from upcountry.

He directed the Agriculture Research, which was supervising the Foundation Seed Cell, to promote and popularise amongst the wheat growers approved - early and late sowing - wheat varieties such as Tj-83, Anmool, Sarsubz, Marvi, Bhattai, Mehran Soghat and Abadgar to help achieve the area and production target fixed by the government.

He said basic seed should be provided only to those seed companies having good track record for multiplication and certification in transparent manner. He said Sindh Agriculture University and Sindh Seed Corporation should also be supported in their seed multiplication programmes.

Meanwhile, the provincial agriculture department has launched a comprehensive programme for cleaning and seed grading through its static grading machines at Sakrand, Tando Jam, Kot digi and Ghotki at the rate of rupee 10 per 40 kg of seed.

He said a mobile seed processing and grading had also been introduced which processed and graded grower's seed at the Agriculture Extension offices at Tando Allahyar, Mirpurkhas and Umerkot districts and from 4th November at Sanghar, Nawabshah, Matiari and Hyderabad districts.

He also directed the maxim seed of cotton and paddy might be obtained and stored from the existing crop, which after process and grading could be used for next year crop.
